The Drumshack Experience Class Session: Thursdays
This Meetup is for beginners who are interested in learning about African drumming to intermediate players with some drumming experience. You will be challenged no matter what your skill level and have fun at the same time.
The djembe drum and its rhythms originate from cultures associated with the great Malian empire of West Africa. Develop technique, hand coordination and traditional rhythms in an ensemble.
You will learn to drum in a relaxed low pressure environment. You’ll learn the various accompaniment parts to the rhythms as well as the breaks and solos.
The class is taught by an experienced African Drumshack Durban Drummer, with over 17 years experience on the Djembe drum.
The ability to play the bass note & the tone note on the Djembe Drum
Students should bring their own djembe to class.
Djembes available for rent or purchase from African Drumshack.
Intermediate Class Session run for 3 weeks

WHAT: Durban Drummers Djembe Hand Drumming Classes
Djembe Drumming Class Beginner/Refresher – Classes run Thursdays 17h30-18h30
Beginners or Drop ins welcome: A typical class will start with warm up exercises working on the two basics sounds (bass & tone). While leaning a rhythm, you will drum along with other class members playing the same patterns. Focus is on cohesion & a steady group rhythm with intro & outro signals.
Djembe Drumming Class Intermediate – Classes run 3-weeks consecutively Thursdays 18h30-19h30
A typical class will start with warm up exercises working on the three basics sounds (bass, tone & slap). After the warm up, you’ll review rhythms learned in the previous class and either continue on those rhythms or start into a new rhythm. While leaning a rhythm, you will drum along with other class members playing the different accompaniments as well as beginning with the breaks that announce the start of each rhythm.
